The Blessed One Meditates

Psalm 1:1-2

Psalm 1:1-2 beckons us towards the path of blessing, a spiritual stance that establishes the groundwork for thriving under divine direction. The psalm commences with a juxtaposition: the blessed individual is not only one who sporadically evades evil, but rather one who deliberately refrains from immoral advice, the companionship of transgressors, and the presence of scoffers. Walking, standing, and sitting denote escalating degrees of engagement; they illustrate how sin can insidiously infiltrate when vigilance is lacking.

The essence of a blessed life encompasses not only what is shunned but also what is cherished: “his delight is in the law of the Lord.” Delight is not an onerous obligation, but rather a profound inner thrill and yearning. The "law of the Lord" signifies more than a mere legal system; it embodies the teachings, instructions, and guidance of God's essence. The delight in God's instruction alters the believer's perspective: instead of being influenced by worldly wisdom, they are molded by divine truth.

Meditation is the subsequent characteristic of the blessed individual: “in his law does he meditate day and night.” In Hebrew, the term for meditation (hagah) connotes contemplation, mumbling, whispering, and reflecting on truth. It is not a temporal nor ceremonial endeavor, but rather a perpetual cadence. Day and night represent perpetual commitment, a life immersed in God's message.

This commitment to God's word foreshadows the Messiah, Jesus, from a Messianic viewpoint. He embodies the living Word, representing the culmination of the Law and the Prophets. Individuals who revel in God's teachings and contemplate them are, in essence, engaging in the Kingdom established by Christ a Kingdom founded on His doctrine, embodying and reflecting upon divine truth.

Through meditation, we not only comprehend God's directives but also assimilate them within ourselves. Our intellects are revitalized, our hearts aligned, and our lives grounded in the principles of the Lord.

Genuine blessings arise from dismissing the advice of the wicked and wholeheartedly accepting God's truth. By contemplating His law continuously, we synchronize with the Messiah, developing in His image and becoming entrenched in His Kingdom.
