The Eternal Word Made Known
St John 1:1
The inaugural passage of John’s Gospel constitutes one of the most profound assertions in the entirety of Scripture. It does not just present the narrative of Christ. It reveals His essence, identity, and everlasting magnificence. Prior to the inaugural dawn illuminating the shapeless abyss, the Word existed. This is not a point of inception. It is an assertion of being without origin. The Word who will incarnate and reside among us is the same Word that was with God in eternal preexistence and is, in essence, God Himself.
John employs the phrase "Word" to denote Christ as the complete manifestation of the Father. The Word conveys all that the Father desires. The Word embodies all that the Father wishes to disclose. This solitary verse articulates the profound truth of paradise. Jesus is not simply dispatched by God. He is the divine presence among us, the manifestation of sacred communication, revelation, and authority.
This verse also lays the groundwork for the Messianic hope. The Messiah is not merely a savior summoned during a time of trouble. He is the Eternal One who intervenes in history to restore what only He can redeem. When we observe Christ in the Gospels, we are not witnessing an inception. We are observing the revelation of the Eternal One.
This reality provides significant reassurance to the believer. If Christ predated all creation, then nothing within creation can surpass the Creator. If He is divine, then His assurances are infallible. If He is the Word, then every utterance He makes possesses the same authority that brought light into existence.
This also compels us to greater reverence. Christ is both our Savior and the eternal God who entered time to enable humanity to access grace. The One who was in communion with God now beckons us to accompany Him. The Divine Being bestows onto us the vitality, illumination, and veracity that only He can provide.
Christ is eternal and uncreated.
The Word discloses the essence and purpose of God.
The Messiah is both in communion with God and wholly divine.
His everlasting nature guarantees the believer's hope.
The revelation of Christ constitutes the revelation of the Father.
In contemplating the everlasting Word, we perceive the Messiah who transcends time while entering our realm to impart life, truth, and unwavering hope. May His everlasting presence fortify your faith today.
