Wandering Sheep
Isaiah 53:6
When we compare wandering sinners to wandering sheep, we see their peril and inability to recover. Sheep without a shepherd are vulnerable to wild beasts and enemies, risk perishing due to lack of pasture, and can’t find their way back. Regardless of their suffering, they continue to wander, risking loss if not found.
However, sheep aren’t to blame. If they were rational, they’d be culpable. If they had a wise shepherd, recognized him, rejected his protection, and chose danger over safety, they’d deserve blame.
Humans are like sheep too. They’re rebellious, choosing inventions over God’s path to rest. They reject a safe path, ignoring warnings and laws. When they stray from God, they refuse to return, mocking His messengers and preferring their misery to His guidance.
God deserves the title of the Good Shepherd, who laid down His life to restore these sheep. We’re like sheep, prone to err and swayed by evil. When we stray, we face danger and can’t return without the shepherd’s care. We need a redeemer to guide us back to the right path.
