Living in the Light of His Coming

2nd Peter 3:10-11

Peter encourages us to view the end as a theological lens through which believers define their everyday lives, rather than as a threat. The Lord will return suddenly, sovereignly, and without fail. In order to make the believer aware of the fleeting character of the material world, the apostle explains how the heavens and elements dissolve. Nothing created by humans for its own glory will last. Only everything which is committed to the Messiah and has its roots in righteousness will endure.

Both judgment and renewal were stressed in the early Jewish expectation of the Day of the Lord. The consuming fire also purifies. All deeds are revealed not only as exposure but also as divine restoration, correction, and preparation for the new creation that is promised throughout the canon of prophecies. Peter reminds the Church that eschatology is not conjecture in his pastorally urgent writing. Sanctification is what it is. He poses a question about character rather than timeframes. "What kind of people ought you to be?" The solution is obvious. Live a holy life. Lead a godly life. Live your life such that it reflects the glory of Christ after all the shadows are gone.

This chapter contains elements of messianic fulfillment. The humble One will return in grandeur.
